EQ: There are more people who would like to come into the US than what the US is allowing each year to enter legally. As a result we’ve seen an increase in illegal immigration into the US. What can we do to help address this concern?
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the different issues and policies concerning immigration.
Student will create their own immigration policy as a solution to the growing concern over immigration.
Immigration Policy Project
In sections three and four of chapter three, we’ve learned about the different types of migration patterns that take place. In these sections, we also learned about the different push and pull factors that lead people to migrate, the age range of those that migrate, and even the genders of migrants. In this last section, we’ve learned about immigration policy, the consequences and reactions of nations who experience immigration, but most importantly, we learned how policy influences the lives of migrants. Policy like family reunification programs, sponsorship's, quotas, refugee programs, and initiatives like guest worker programs.
In this period, immigration has been a hot topic in our nation. In recent news, we’ve seen ideas about changing the 14th Amendment, building a wall, stopping immigration from certain parts of the world, to even sending the military to protect the border.
In groups of three, I would like for you to come up with a policy on immigration that will help bring a solution to the growing immigration dilemma that our country is facing.
Issue: There are more people who would like to come into the US than what the US is allowing each year to enter legally. As a result we’ve seen an increase in illegal immigration into the US.
Remember: there are different components/pieces to immigration. Find a solution for just one part of the piece and not a blanket policy.
Step 1: Research the issue; what are people concerned about?
Step 2: Consider the condition of those who are migrating/immigrating? What are they facing?
Step 3: What are we doing the works and what are we doing that doesn’t work?
Step 4: Create a policy that improves something we are already doing or create a completely new policy that is different from what we are currently doing or done in the past.
Step 5: How will this policy impact individuals in the US?
Step 6: How will we pay for this new policy and enforcement and who will enforce it?
